The United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency (NCA) is taking steps to increase its focus on cryptocurrency-related crimes in order to combat criminals. To this end, the NCA’s cyber-focused command, the National Cyber Crime Unit (NCCU), is launching a dedicated cryptocurrency unit which will be initially staffed by five officers. The unit, dubbed NCCU Crypto Cell, is being set up to investigate U.K. cyber incidents involving the use of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC).
In order to ensure that the new unit is well-equipped to tackle cyber crimes involving crypto, the NCA is looking to hire a cryptocurrency investigator with a good understanding of the crypto space and strong experience in conducting blockchain forensic investigations on serious and organized crime. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing strategic and tactical advice to investigators in cases involving crypto, thus supporting both existing and new investigations. The investigator will be expected to have the expertise necessary to identify and recover seed phrases, as well as the ability to conduct advanced tracing through blockchains.
The position is being offered with a salary of £50,000 (approx. $65,000) and the successful applicant will have the opportunity to work in a team at the forefront of protecting the U.K. from cyber crime. In addition to the salary, the position also offers other benefits such as flexible working arrangements, support for professional development, and access to specialist equipment and training.
The NCCU Crypto Cell is part of the NCA’s ongoing efforts to tackle cyber crime, which also includes initiatives such as its Cyber Crime Assessment Framework and its Cyber Security Strategy. The NCA has also recently announced plans to extend its cyber capabilities to respond to international threats, including those posed by cryptocurrency-related crimes.
As the world of cryptocurrency continues to evolve, the NCA’s NCCU Crypto Cell is just one example of the steps being taken by governments and law enforcement agencies to ensure the security of digital assets. The successful applicant of the NCA’s cryptocurrency investigator role will no doubt play a key role in helping to protect the U.K.’s digital infrastructure and combat cyber criminals.
